Una Sealy: A Piano in the Kitchen and other stories
Opening Reception Thursday 22 November at 7pm • To be opened by Emily O’Reilly, Ombudsman and Information Commissioner
Una Sealy’s work is based on domestic interiors, streetscape, landscape and portraiture. She paints from observation and often the compositions evolve organically, with elements appearing and disappearing before the final arrangement is arrived at. The works form a kind of visual autobiography. As well as the paintings, there will be studies and life drawings exhibited, which show the background of her practice.
Una is a graduate of Dun Laoghaire College of Art and Design (now IADT), in Fine Art, Painting, 1980, and UCD (Higher Diploma in Arts Administration, 1989), and is a recently elected Associate of the Royal Hibernian Academy. During her 30 year career to date, she has been involved in many aspects of the arts while maintaining her commitment to painting throughout. In 1982 she co-founded Studio 16, one of the first and longest running group artists’ studios in Temple Bar, Dublin.
During the 80’s she was very involved in the community arts movement and was manager of City Arts Centre, Dublin (1985 to 1991). Una lectured in painting at Dun Laoghaire College of Art and Design from 1991 to 1996, after which she moved to San Francisco where she painted and exhibited for two years.
Una has held seven solo exhibitions and has been selected for curated group shows in San Francisco, New York and Britain as well as many in Ireland, exhibiting regularly at the RHA annual exhibition for the last 20 years. She lives and works in Howth, North County Dublin.
