Adam Bohanna | Two Views of Carlow – Adam Bohanna (1968-) & Frank O’Meara (1853-1888) | Saturday 6 September 2014 – Sunday 11 January 2015 | VISUAL Centre for Contemporary Art

Two Views of Carlow features work by Carlow artists, Frank O’Meara (1853-1888) and contemporary painter Adam Bohanna. Although working in different times, both practices explore landscape as a medium that reflects place, identity and the ways in which we inhabit our environments.

Frank O’ Meara left Carlow for France in 1872. He became an influential figure within the Barbizon School, painting and sketching landscapes and rural life with a sympathetic realism. The influence of Carlow’s river and rural landscapes that he sketched as a young man can be seen in the work that he made at this time. Adam Bohanna’s paintings and drawings of Carlow present a contemporary viewpoint, framed by the influence of painters of landscape and life, such as O’Meara. Bohanna’s Carlow is one where similar vistas can be found but the ruins within the landscape are now of an industrial nature.

This exhibition has kindly been supported by The Carlow Collection, St Patricks Carlow College through the loan of works by Frank O’Meara.
