Theresa Nanigian: master of my universe
just a bit extraordinary is a national tour of three distinct exhibitions by artist, Theresa Nanigian, who creates portraits of contemporary Western life, curated by Aoife Ruane, Director of the Highlanes Gallery, Drogheda. The second chapter of the exhibition, master of my universe, considers the middle developmental stage of adulthood often preoccupied with earning a living. Unusually Nanigian chooses to explore this stage by documenting the vendors on the boardwalk of Venice Beach, California.
The guardians of this ‘sidewalk circus’ are a diverse range of nationalities, ages, socioeconomic status and personal histories, who display an equally quirky spectrum of merchandise entertainment and personal philosophy.
A series of events will take place over the course of the exhibition including a visit by Theresa Nanigian to the Milk Market in the company of Katie Verling and local historian Tom Toomey. This event will take place on Saturday 11 November @ 11:30am.
On Friday 10 November the artist will be in conversation with Professor Meg Harper, University of Limerick on the precariousness of making a living. This event will be held in LCGA @ 3pm.
The just a bit extraordinary tour began in April 2017 at the Lab Gallery, Dublin an exhibition of photographs and a short video that observe the older patrons of the bi-monthly tea dances held in the royal Opera House, Covent Garden and the Macuhsla Dance Club in Dublin.
The final exhibition in the series combines elements of these two exhibitions with a survey of Nanigian’s first instalment in her life cycle series, not sorry, and will open at the Highlanes Gallery, Drogheda in September 2018.
The exhibition has received a Touring Award from the Arts Council and is sponsored by Drogheda Credit Union, Drogheda-Bettystown-Trim. A full colour publication will accompany the exhibition at the Highlanes Gallery.
