Tempest: Steve Wickham

from Saturday 4 July
Tempest: Steve Wickham | from Saturday 4 July | Roscommon Arts Centre | Steve Wickham | a quick sketch, possibly charcoal plus maybe watercolour; two figures apparently in some sort of crisis; it looks as though the figure on the right has a leg inury – a leg is stretched across the bottom of the drawing, and the figure appears to have hand and face wounds, judging by smudges of red; the figure on the left is perhaps helping, but also distraught – amounts of blood-red on clothes, arms, face, gesture of shock in raising hands to sides of the head
Opening Reception Friday 3 July at 6pm

This exhibition comprises of a mixture of paintings, drawings and prints and is inspired by Steve’s time working on Deirdre Kinahan’s play ‘Tempestsa’. During 2023/24, Steve was commissioned to write the score and perform in the play. The first run of the play was in Dublin and he was ensconced in a hotel for fifty nights in Temple Bar. The hotel room became a painters studio during the run and the exhibition was born of his engagement with the play, which centred on a story of love during the Spanish Civil War. Five of the large canvases are a response in 2024 to the writing of Francoise Sagan ‘bonjour tristesse’. This work was a collaboration with musician Joe Chester who wrote a suite of guitar music inspired by the same novel. Steve is also an accomplished violinist, and has performed around the world and recorded on over 100 albums with various artists including The Waterboys, U2, Bob Dylan, REM Sinead O’Connor and many more.
