Black Church Print Studio invited Jaki Irvine to curate an exhibition on behalf of the Studio in September 2017 in The Library Project, Temple Bar. The aim of this invitation was to stimulate public interest in printmaking media and to contextualize its methodologies and principles within broader contemporary art practice. Her response is Surface Tensions.

Jaki Irvine is interested in aspects of print with a roughness or rawness, its points of intersection, where print characteristics cross over into other mediums and vice versa. Juxtaposing works by Mehraneh Atashi, Santiago Borja, Gary Hume, Catriona Leahy, Niamh O’Malley and Julia Wolfe, Jaki Irvine re-considers print and expanded print practices. Emphasis is placed on an insistence of repetition, layering, focusing and refocusing, to the point of obsession, where this activity undoes itself. This very process of undoing gives rise to something that speaks about the difficulty of image making.

During the exhibition preview on Thursday evening RIAM (Royal Irish Academy of Music) Percussion Ensemble will perform Julia Wolfe’s Dark Full Ride, written for 4 sets of drums, in the Atrium Space of Temple Bar Gallery & Studios, 5-9 Temple Bar, Dublin at 8pm sharp. This is a one-off performance and not to be missed. Parts of the score of this piece will be included in exhibition itself.

Jaki Irvine will give an informal walk through the exhibition and speak about her curatorial approach at lunchtime on Friday 8 September at The Library Project. This is part of Black Church Print Studio critical seminar programme A&E (Analyse and Experiment). This exhibition will also be open late for Culture Night on Friday 22 September.

Jaki Irvine (b. 1966, Dublin) is an artist who lives and works in Dublin and Mexico City. She is concerned with how we come to imagine and understand ourselves from within our privacy and often uses video installation as a way to reflect on moments where this process, awkwardly and unavoidably, comes spilling into the public spaces of our lives. Her solo exhibitions include IMMA (2016), Project Arts Centre (1996), Kerlin Gallery (2004) and the Douglas Hyde Gallery (1999, 2005) in Dublin, Frith Street Gallery (1997, 1999, 2011) the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Baden-Baden, Germany (1998) and Delfina Project Space (2001) in London, Henry Moore Institute (2004) Leeds and Galleria Alessandro de March (2004) Milan. In 1995 Irvine was included in the seminal exhibition of Young British Artists, General Release, at the Venice Biennale, and represented Ireland at the 1997 Biennale. In 2008 Irvine produced a major video installation entitled In a World Like This, which was produced in collaboration with Chisenhale Gallery, London and The Model Arts and Niland Gallery, Sligo. In 2011, a new solo exhibition of video works Before This Page is Turned, developed in the Dublin Graphic Print Studios, was presented at the Kerlin Gallery, Dublin. She has also participated in numerous group shows throughout Europe, Australia and Japan. Irvine is represented in the collections of IMMA, the Irish Arts Council, Tate Modern, FRAC and in numerous other collections, both public and private.

RIAM Percussion Ensemble
Under the directorship of the National Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Percussionist, Richard O’Donnell, the RIAM Percussion Ensemble is one of Ireland’s leading exponents of music for the medium. It has a strong commitment to presenting contemporary music to a wide audience in venues from Dublin’s National Concert Hall to The Helix, as well as other leading venues around the country. The Ensemble has also broadcast on lyric fm. In addition to an annual exchange programme with the Brooklyn College of Music in New York, the Ensemble has also travelled to Spain and South America to participate in international music festivals. Future plans include a return visit to New York and a series of concerts at The Helix in Dublin

Black Church Print Studio is located in the heart of Temple Bar, Dublin. As an artistic collective, it supports and promotes the development of contemporary artistic practice through the medium of printmaking. This is achieved through the provision of excellent studio facilities, a diverse artistic programme, and by the promotion of fine art print as a leading artform both nationally and internationally.
