Supporters club talk #1: Jaki Irvine – ‘On holding on and letting go’
Wednesday 9 July, 6pm, Studio 6
Temple Bar Gallery + Studios is pleased to announce the first in its series of supporters club talks. Recently returned to TBG+S as a studio member, artist Jaki Irvine will present three of her recent film works and talk about the ideas and concepts that connect them. ‘56 Inch Fantasy’ was made in 2008-9, and was based on a conversation the artist overheard before stepping into a lift. It reflects a moment just before the economic crash, where everything is seen in terms of investments, assets and tax breaks as ordinary lives are lived within an overblown corporate fantasy. The second work that will be screened is entitled ‘Before the Page has Turned’. It was filmed at Dublin Graphic Print studios, in 2011 and registers some of the subsequent pain, confusion and sense of disorientation that accompanied the economic breakdown. In the meantime, people were trying to get on with their ordinary lives. For some, this involved the making of art. The final work that Jaki will present is entitled ‘Se compra:sin é ’. It was shot in Mexico city in 2012-2013 and uses the calls of local Mexican street sellers and Irish Sean nos singing to create a multi-layered musical composition. It has never been screened in Ireland before.
