Stephen Forbes: Movement
Forbes’ latest body of work depicts two subjects: swimming pools and floating figures.
The swimming pool series narrates a hive of human activity. Figures are diving, running and swimming on a platform of cobalt blue, which acts as a stage for various activities to emerge. At first glance, there is a primitive naivety to this plain of blue, with the use of primary colours. Beyond this immediacy, the viewer experiences the subtle and sophisticated act of rhythmic mark-making.
The second subject of Forbes’ new body of work comprises of small figures floating across shifting plains of saturated blues. There is an atmospheric space created, within which these monochromatic figures playfully interact. The image causes the viewer to interact with the individual figures and rhythmical structures weaving their way through the picture plain.
Stephen Forbes was born in Northern Ireland in 1973. He trained at the Royal Academy London and the Liverpool John Moores University. He has exhibited at the Royal Academy Main Galleries, the Royal Hibernian Academy, Art London and the Royal Ulster Academy annual.
