Sonja Landweer: A Life’s Work, Retrospective Exhibition
Opening Reception Friday 16 September at 7:30pm
Sonja Landweer stands as one of the country’s most significant ceramic artists and a pioneering force in Irish art and craft. A Life’s Work pays tribute to years dedicated to this creativity and the pursuit of a wisdom inspired by our place in nature.
Her work has developed through a close understanding of the natural world, ceramic forms stand as objects laden with intensity and fragility, evocative of all that is perfect in nature. Glazes mark the work with subtleties that have been honed over a lifetime investigating her mediums. In more recent years her works in bronze have been acclaimed for their revolutionary casting methods and unique patinatinations. This exhibition also displays jewellery made by the artist, delicate combinations of materials and exquisite objects in their own right.
Landweer came to Ireland in 1965 from her native Holland on an artist’s residency to the Kilkenny Design Workshop and has since been making a tremendous contribution to the arts both in Ireland and internationally. Her work is in numerous collections around the world and was recently part of The Moderns exhibition at IMMA, which celebrated the development of Modernism in Ireland from 1900 to 1970.
This exhibition has been gratefully supported by the Crafts Council of Ireland and The Embassy of The Netherlands in Ireland and Private Sponsorship. Sonja Landweer is represented by Peppercanister Gallery, Dublin.
A casebound catalogue will accompany this exhibition with texts by Dr. Nicola Gordon Bowe, Seamus Heaney, Catherine Marshall, Hilary Orpen and Michael Robinson.
