Sharon Lee: Under the Rock & Katherine Van Uytrecht: So Hum | Thursday 6 October – Saturday 29 October 2011 | Graphic Studio Gallery

Opening Reception Thursday 6 October at 6pm

This two-person exhibition highlights two well-established printmakers who specialize in lithography, Sharon Lee and Katherine Van Uytrecht.

‘So Hum’ is a body of new works by Katherine Van Uytrecht portraying people and places recalled from memory and re-appropriated into light hearted and whimsical scenes. In creating this playful imagery, Van Uytrecht shares her enjoyment of her environment. Although the work draws from her visits to Varanasi and Bodhgaya in India, they also integrate indigenous imagery from South Africa. Van Uytrecht incorporates humour yet reflects aspects of identity – who we are and how we are all connected. She states “we are all mirrored by our environments and experiences through each other”. Born in South Africa Van Uytrecht graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town with a major in printmaking. She is a member of Graphic Studio Dublin since 2003 and has exhibited in various group shows in Ireland and internationally.

Begun during a winter residency in Sweden, Sharon Lee’s new works use the light and isolation as an alternative departure point for this work. She continues the central theme of exploring the body as a landscape on a microscopic level and the communications that occur at this molecular level. Her interest in science is related to the perennial human need for understanding and reflection of our place in the order of things.

Exploration through process, documentation, mapping, classifying and reordering she draws and creates the images with the intent of a scientific inquirer. Symbols and signs are converted to signifiers to give the images an aura of knowledge and accuracy, which in turn invite inspection. Through layering and building the images with printing, collage and cutting she creates these abstract landscapes. Born in Galway, she studied Fine Art Printmaking at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin and the Academy of Fine Arts, Ljubljana, Slovenia. She graduated in 2003 with a first class honours degree. In 2008 she completed the Master Printer Programme at Tamarind Institute, Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is currently working at the Royal College of Art, London as a technical instructor in lithography.
