RTE Reflecting the Rising
The Royal Hibernian Academy presents a series of lectures on Easter Monday as part of RTÉ’s 1916 Reflecting the Rising. Contemplating the place of revolution in Irish art, the talks will particularly examine the contribution of women as well as the contribution of the Royal Hibernian Academy.
An esteemed panel of lecturers will interrogate and explore this theme throughout the day. Guest lecturers include; artist Mary A. Kelly; art historian Dr. Róisín Kennedy; Irish writer/historian Sinéad McCoole; art historian Dr. Éimear O’Connor HRHA; and RHA professor of Art History and art historian, Dr. John Turpin HRHA.
In 1916, the Royal Hibernian Academy, more than any other cultural institution in Ireland, experienced the magnitude of the Rising. Academy House, the RHA’s original purpose-built building, was situated on Lower Abbey Street. On Thursday the 27th of April 1916, Academy House, most of its contents and the entire Annual Exhibition of that year were destroyed by fire during the Easter Rising.
