Richard Proffitt: Every Leaf Was Turning

Every Leaf Was Turning is a collection of 12 new works on paper that continue to develop my interests in sub-culture, folk customs and spirituality. The paintings consist of landscapes, ‘still lifes’, semi-abstractions and a self-portrait, variously depicting conflicting scenes of homeliness and escape, the trivial and the profound, fellowship and loneliness, the local and the exotic, the everyday and the supernatural. The overall theme of this body of work is perhaps the strange sense of freedom that the enforced withdrawal from everyday life has granted me. The solitude and ability to work without constraint, the ownership of one’s own time and the hypnotic slowness of it.
