A masterclass in envisioning and delivering large-scale programmes in the public realm – referring to projectsNowhereisland, One Day Sculpture and Slow Space, Oslo.

2. Claire Feeley – Producing in the Public Realm

A masterclass introduction to working with non-arts individuals to deliver projects outside the gallery – examples Annika Kahrs Concert for the Birds and Katie Paterson’s Future Library.

3. Michael Prior – Engagement

A masterclass introduction to building a constituency around a project from the ground up, such as with Nowhereisland. This session will also reference evaluation techniques and partnership working

Background to the Event

Create, the national development agency for collaborative arts, and the National Sculpture Factory are delighted to be working with Cork City Arts Office and the Office of Public Works to present a two day event on public art, with a keynote by Claire Doherty (Director of Situations) and a master class by the Situations team, for artists and commissioners looking at emerging and growing trends within International Public Art commissioning

In the last number of years, Create and the NSF has been promoting and fostering opportunities for artists within the public realm, and in 2014 Create and the National Sculpture Factory will present a large-scale public art commission by Simon Mc Keown in Cork as part of the national Ignite programme.

This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the National Public Art Guidelines, so we are especially delighted to announce this two-day event which offers an opportunity for in depth conversations about international directions & developments in the commissioning of public art.

The event will commence with Claire Doherty detailing her latest work The New Rules of Public Art and on Day Two we will host two intensive master-classes, one for artists and one for commissioners.

About Claire Doherty

Claire Doherty is a curator, writer, and educator who investigates new and unconventional models of curatorial practice. Doherty is the Founder and Director of Situations, a commissioning and research program based at the University of West England in Bristol. Situations commissions artists’ projects, often outside conventional gallery or museum settings, with an emphasis on new forms of public engagement and broad international distribution. In collaboration with the Litmus Research Initiative and various curators and institutions, Doherty organized ONE-DAY SCULPTURE, a diverse series of twenty commissioned, 24-hour ephemeral public artworks across New Zealand. She edited Situation (2009), part of the Documents of Contemporary Art series, and Contemporary Art: From Studio to Situation (2004). Doherty is a visiting Lecturer in Curating at the Royal College of Art in London and Senior Research Fellow at the University of West England in Bristol.

About Situations

Situations opens up the potential for artists to make extraordinary ideas happen in unusual and surprising places, through which audiences and participants are inspired to explore new horizons.

They commission and produce both temporary and long-term public artworks, as well as acting as a connector to bring people and partners together through collective programmes and festival events in the South West of England and internationally. Their growing portfolio of projects feeds an on-going public programme of events, discussions, publications and debates called Public Art Now, which seeks to improve the conditions for, and skills to produce, new forms of public art nationally and internationally. Their work is guided by a belief in the capacity for the arts to change, enhance and inform the way we think about and interact with the world around us. For them, public spaces outside conventional arts venues offer the most rich and rewarding contexts in which that can happen.

Working beyond the boundaries of a gallery or museum context offers a rich and often challenging set of conditions. Situations begin from a more dynamic understanding of place than a physical site, inviting artists to contribute to the lived experience of a place. This consideration of situation (a set of conditions, locations, people, moments in time and circumstance) rather than location means that every newly commissioned project starts with a process of becoming locally embedded

History

Situations began its story in 2002 as a public art commissioning programme embedded within the University of the West of England in Bristol. Founded by Claire Doherty, previously Curator at Ikon in Birmingham and FACT in Liverpool, Situations grew from Claire’s sole curatorial endeavour to become an organisation recognised for the international reach and high quality of its work and for the distinctive and surprising ways in which it has engaged audiences. This is reflected in the award of the Paul Hamlyn Breakthrough Award for Outstanding Cultural Entrepreneurs in 2010.

Create is the national development agency for collaborative arts, supporting artists & communities to make outstanding contemporary collaborative.

The National Sculpture Factory (NSF) is an organisation which provides and promotes a supportive and enabling environment for the making of art and the realisation of creative projects. We actively support artists and their practice through residencies, lecture programmes, cultural exchanges, master classes and professional development workshops.
