Your Photos, Your Memories, Our History
In partnership with the Gallery of Photography
As part of Mermaid Arts Centre 1916 commemorative programme we will exhibit selected works from The Photo Album of Ireland.
Our photo albums give an insight into our private and public histories. Photographs from family albums or private collections often reveal details about how people lived and worked, the architecture, fashion, customs and daily life that official records don’t always capture. As generations pass our knowledge about this valuable social history is often lost.
This exhibition will present two Wicklow families photo albums as well as other family albums from around the country. The images exhibited will cover the period from the invention of photography in 1839 up until the advent of digital photography in the late 1980s early 1990s. We will have an open call to the people of Wicklow to come along on two days to have their albums scanned and added to the national archive.
