Photo Album of Ireland

Photo Album of Ireland | Friday 15 August – Sunday 28 September 2014 | Market House

Opening Reception Thursday 14 August at 7pm • Official launch by Heather Humphreys T.D., Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht

Presented by Monaghan County Council and the Gallery of Photography

Our photo albums can give a fascinating insight into our private and public histories. Photographs from family albums or private collections often reveal details about how people lived and worked that official records often won’t capture.

What role does photography play in recording our ordinary lives? What is the connection between photography and memory? What do our family photographs reveal?

The Photo Album of Ireland project has invited people to digitally share their cherished family photographs. We are building a democratic archive that looks at the social history of Ireland from the perspective of family, private or unseen photographic collections. The project is using high digital production techniques to record, preserve and share this valuable social history and build a new visual resource. The research work of the archive will be presented in a series of programmed exhibitions and outdoor projections in touring venues.

Funded by the Arts Council Touring Award, Gallery of Photography Ireland and Monaghan Heritage Services. Touring partners: Monaghan County Council Heritage & Arts Office, The Hunt Museum, Limerick, and Sirius Arts Centre, Cobh.
