As a reaction to the generic Christmas open exhibition, ‘On Beauty’ will present a survey of ideas about beauty and related concepts, questioning the value of aesthetic experience and the variety of aesthetic attitudes.
The traditional interest in beauty itself broadened in the eighteenth century to include the sublime. Burke’s Philosophical Enquiry and in its wake Kant’s Critique of Judgment each consistently distinguished the sublime from the beautiful, treating both categories as forms of ‘taste’, that is to say of aesthetic experience. This exhibition endeavours to cultivate a perspective on ideas of transcendence, particularly in connection with modes of the sublime that seek to denigrate or repress human experience and the unsettling otherness of the unconscious.
