Brian Bourke: Obsessions, Preoccupations, Themes & Variations
The opening of a solo exhibition by Brian Bourke will take place on Friday 3 June, at 6pm in the Galway Arts Centre. Obsessions, Preoccupations, Themes & Variations will feature new and recent works, including a series in response to a residency completed with Galway’s Contempo Quartet.
The exhibition will address different themes in Bourke’s work, and attempt to create new narratives through juxtaposing different works together. Galway Arts Centre’s gallery will become a place for the audience to explore the artists’ process; how one painting, experience or memory can instigate a series of new work or ignite a response to an existing one.
Additional events:
As part of the exhibition, Contempo will play a free concert in the Gallery at 6pm on Thursday 9th June.
Additionally, on 30th June, Galway Arts Centre will host a very special evening in Nun’s Island Theatre. At 6pm, the legendary filmmaker Bob Quinn will introduce Self Portrait with Red Car and Lillipup, two films made in the 1970’s with Brian Bourke. Self Portrait with Red Car experiments with the subjectivity of image in relation to sound. Lillipup is a surreal and subversive take on how the pursuits of art and the artist is at odds with everyday life. Both films were shot in Quinn’s and Bourke’s adoptive home of Connemara.
These will be followed by a talk by Brian Bourke.
