Narrative Thread
Wednesday 17 August – Saturday 27 August 2011
Opening reception Tuesday 16 August at 6pm
Textiles are literally the Cinderella of craft. From seemingly humble beginnings, stitch on stitch, they start at the level of the domestic, and yet many do go to the ball. The nature of crafting thread and fabric provides an infinitely inexhaustible range of expression, and the processes of making: stitching, weaving, layering, texturing, dying; create a steadily building narrative of time spent in the creation of a completed idea. We may use some of these pieces to give us clothing and warmth but, as this exhibition demonstrates, textiles can also transcend the utilitarian, becoming fantasy pieces, with fantastic forms to savour, where we can lose ourselves in the story of their stitches.
