Mike Byrne: URBANESQUE

Friday 11 April – Sunday 11 May 2025
Mike Byrne: URBANESQUE | Friday 11 April – Sunday 11 May 2025 | Limerick City Gallery | Image: photo of two ceramic works; each resembles a building, the left, blue-ish one perhaps a Norman castle with parapet and a single window low in its façade; the reddish work on the right is more like an apartment block, lower, with three square window shapes on the left, one above the other
Opening Reception Thursday 10 April, 5 – 7pm

Mike’s work is a continuous exploration of form and colour. He builds soft clay slabs into shapes that express the material’s malleability, and contrast that with sharp edges and severe cuts incised into the solid block forms.

The surface patina is built up using multiple layers of coloured engobes and dry glaze.

Each piece is fired numerous times until the desired depth of surface colour and texture is reached.

Mike commenced this body of work while on a Ceramics Residency in Berlin in October 2024, completing it in his studio in Limerick over a number months. As with all his work, these pieces are experimental, each piece a moment in a lifetime of exploration.

Mike is delighted to be exhibiting URBANESQUE for the first time in Limerick City Gallery of Art.
