Michael Wann: The Old Grieving Fields, charcoal on paper, 60 x 70cm | Michael Wann: The Old Grieving Fields | Thursday 6 February – Saturday 1 March 2025 | Solomon Fine Art | Image: Michael Wann: The Old Grieving Fields, charcoal on paper, 60 x 70cm | the overall shape of the drawing is reminiscent of a polaroid photo – white band bordering three side, with the fourth at the bottom much wider; in the band at the bottom we see the image’s title, “The Old Grieving Fields’; the drawing itself is a view down over maybe ten small fields, each bordered by what may be willow and conifer; all is in greyscale, and there is apparent smudging onto the side bands of white, as though this artwork has been through a lot

In this new collection of his distinctive charcoal compositions Wann presents scenes in which terrain and skies are imbued with a sense of foreboding and vulnerability. The Old Grieving Fields is a lament to a landscape in distress.

Through an emotive resonance of light and shade, the mostly unpopulated rural settings in Wann’s compositions are charged with unease and a disquiet of perspective. Smoke rises from distant fields; helicopters hover and night skies are lit by mysterious activity. Wann’s landscapes and patchwork aerial views, heavy with weather, speak of memory and place and of the mapping of terrain.
