Michael Quane: Out of Pareidolia
Opening reception Saturday 9 July at 1pm
Pareidolia; pulling together random sensory stimuli in order to extract a personalized meaning; forming recognizable images or indeed sounds from the un-smooth fabric of the ambient environment; a highly subjective sensory process of extracting sensory meaning from sensory stimuli.
Cloud patterns often stimulate this ability in people; producing from within the billowing clouds, sightings of rabbits or gods, sailing boats or trains etc.
Throughout the execution of this body of work Michael Quane sought to be consciously aware of the processes of pareidolia and to follow the suggestions made in this way (ordinarily many of these guidances would be ignored).
And so, in creating the work for Christchurch, the process of “Pareidolia” is inseparable from the practice of direct carving as it is also inseparable from direct drawing. This body of work is an exercise in acknowledgment of that.
The sculptures are works in Kilkenny marble and the drawings are graphite powder and pencil on paper.
Michael Quane was born in Cork in 1962 and studied at the Crawford College of Art And Design. Since his early years at the Crawford College of Art in Cork, Quane has exhibited throughout Europe and the US and has had worldwide commissions for his work which are in the collections of the University College Cork; the Office of Public Works; the Butler Gallery Kilkenny; the Nicholas Treadwell Gallery, London; the University of Limerick, Cork Corporation and A.I.B.
