Mary Burke: Moments of Domesticity | Friday 8 November 2024 – Sunday 19 January 2025 | Municipal Gallery | Image: a domestic scene – a sitting-room, probably; no-one visible – we see furniture etc.; we are facing a sash window looking out on a street on a sunny day, probably in summer; the walls are thick, enough so to hold shutters held in the frame of the window; the wood of the window and shutters is painted white, and sunlight is falling on the left shutter; left and right of the window we see a wall holding two artworks in frames, both apparently portraits; the wall is depicted in muted pastel-colour strokes, all tending towards white; the room has a wooden floor, exposed and polished with much grain showing; on it we see a couch to the left, a table with lamp beside / behind it, a wooden chair in front of the window, facing in; a small0ish armchair to the right of the window; it is loosely covered in some white material, some books in a rotate-able set of bookshelves, a hint of a fireplace, and a small-ish round table directly in front of us, with two or three books stacked neatly on…

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is delighted to present Moments of Domesticity an exhibition of new paintings by Mary Burke.

The exhibition marks the culmination of Mary Burke’s artist’s residency at the Dún Laoghaire Baths Artist Studios. Speaking about the project Mary says “Moments of Domesticity is an attempt to capture slices of people’s lives at this moment in time. Our homes are extensions of ourselves and reflect how we live our lives. We are all temporary custodians of our homes and over time houses are altered and reimagined. Old and new, large, or small, these places are repositories of hopes, dreams, memories, ambitions, of lives being lived. They are worth celebrating.”

The homes were selected based on house type and their location. Mary embarked on a series of house visits that took her to Dundrum, Leopardstown, Dún Laoghaire, Dalkey, Ballybrack, Monkstown, Deansgrange and Ballycorus. She spent the following year painting these homes in her studio at the dlr Baths Artist Studios.

The exhibition is accompanied by a book entitled Mary Burke, Moments of Domesticity with essays by Mary P. Corcoran, sociologist and Cristin Leach, art critic and writer. After the exhibition the paintings and book will be gifted to the people involved.

The exhibition is part of a public art commission funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage under Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council’s Public Art Programme.

Mary Burke graduated with an honours BA in Fine Art from NCAD in 1982. She has had seventeen solo exhibitions and has been awarded several international residencies. Awards include a bursary from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation (Montreal), and a Golden Fleece award from the Lillias Mitchell Trust and Visual Arts Bursaries from the Irish Arts Council (2007, 2009, 2020). Her work is included in many public and corporate collections.
