Marie Phelan: Seeing Double

Friday 30 May – Thursday 10 July 2025
Marie Phelan | Marie Phelan: Seeing Double | Friday 30 May – Thursday 10 July 2025 | Wexford Arts Centre | Image: two photos side by side by Marie Phelan; each is about twice as high as it is wide, and each features double exposure – two images, one imposed on the other; in the left photo, we see two red-framed windows matched with an overhead show of a lily pad in dark water; in the right photo, we see the prow of a boat with reflections in the water, with another image superimposed, but it is hard to decipher – three round holes in a curving surface, with the possibility that the surface is mixed up with the line of the boat’s prow

A solo exhibition of photographic works • Run in association with Wexford Camera Club

Experiments with a Camera
Putting two digital negatives together in the camera is an experiment I really enjoy. In the early days of photography this practice was quite normal in the darkroom. Nowadays, digital cameras offer this fascinating facility. I love the effects produced and the floating feeling of looking through an image. Can you spot the content of the second negative used? Careful selection is really crucial. Here I have used condensation; delaminated wood; a winter tree; a blue barrel in Kilmore Quay as well as more obvious articles. I hope you enjoy my experiments.
