Kevin Gaffney and Sally-Anne Kelly: The Unnameable
Preview Friday 12 August from 5 – 7pm
The Unnameable is a collaboration between artists Kevin Gaffney (MA Photography, Royal College of Art) & Sally-Anne Kelly (MA Performance Design & Practice, Central Saint Martins) who have been working as a filmmaking duo since 2009. The work is a hybridisation of the artists’ individual practices of performance, photography, video, writing and sculpture.
The Unnameable is an 11 minute artists’ film trading in popular culture of sci-fi, cinema and horror. The Unnameable form is in reference to the Devourer from the Egyptian Book of the Dead, whom would decide if a human’s soul goes to heaven or is destroyed. Another motif throughout the film is the double; seen through shadows, reflections and finally in the distorted face of the boy’s plastic twin. The title is a reference to both H.P Lovecraft and Samuel Beckett’s Unnameables, stories that melt in and out of reality and psychosis. Their characters fear what they know and also what eludes them. The Unnameable was filmed on location in Paris and in an abandoned nursery for disabled children in London.
