John O’Reilly: Transient
Opening Reception Thursday 13 September at 7pm
Transient is a new series of oil paintings by John O’Reilly exploring Dublin’s urban landscapes. The works focus on environments built to accommodate vehicles and transport. They are silent, atmospheric areas with unique architecture and machinery. Because these places are often altered to adapt to technological developments in transport, they are very much of this time. Some of these locations are destinations for the vehicle and usually a process of the journey for the person.
John O’Reilly has been a committed graffiti artist for 17 years, only recently has he begun to seriously consider looking at the more restrictive medium of oil on canvas. His former preoccupation leaves it’s mark in his paintings and subject matter. He’s drawn to areas that may have lent themselves as sites to graffiti and in that sense what holds his attention are typically areas of urban decay. These urban landscapes also attempt to capture serenity and reflection within environments of noise and clutter and how nature maintains its relentless dominance over the built environment.
John O’Reilly will also be Artist in Residence in Draíocht’s Artists Studio from July to December 2012.
