John Bellany, RA
Opening reception Thursday 9 June, 5.30 – 8pm
Following on the brilliant colourful abstract paintings of Albert Irvin, the Peppercanister gallery is pleased to announce its first solo exhibition in June of international figurative artist John Bellany RA. CBE.
Bellany is now in his 70th year and divides his time between Italy, England and his native Scotland. He has been described as the most influential Scottish painter of our time. Born in Port Seton, a small fishing village near Edinburgh, his extraordinary high-coloured paintings features fishing boats, seabirds and human beings in uniquely imaginativecompositions, described by fellow-artist Alan Davie as “works of tremendous spiritual and dramatic power”.
He has traveled widely and painted extensively in China, Australia and Europe. He studied art in Edinburgh and London and professes a special admiration for the art of Max Beckmann, Oskar Kokoscha and Jan Breughal. He is proud of his Celtic origins and inspiration, and has survived severe ill-health to produce some of the most memorable images of the 21st Century. Come and join us for a glass of wine this thursday and experience the world through the wonderful work of John Bellany.
