This display is kindly sponsored by Brian Baum in loving memory of Úna Wilson.

In celebration of International Women’s Day Butler Gallery is very pleased to highlight the work of women artists primarily from the gallery’s permanent collection. It is a diverse and eclectic group of works that incorporates many mediums such as painting, drawing, print, sculpture and photography. From the massive to the diminutive, the work on view illustrates the exceptional individualism and skill of each artist. This selection includes works by: Diane Arbus, Aideen Barry, Louise Bourgeois, Mildred Anne Butler, Moya Bligh, Mollie Douthit, Flor Garduño, Helena Gorey, Anita Groener, May Guinness, Eva Hamilton, Mainie Jellett, Eithne Jordan, Liane Lang, Janet Mullarney, Jackie Nickerson, Jane O’Malley, Gypsy Ray, Bennie Reilly, Ciara Roche, Amelia Stein, Mary Swanzy, Anne Yeats.

International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. Each year, this day serves as a powerful reminder of the progress made towards gender equality and highlights the work that still needs to be done. In 2025, the theme is ‘For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment’. The theme calls for action that can unlock equal rights, power and opportunities for all and a feminist future where no one is left behind. Central to this vision is empowering the next generation—youth, particularly young women and adolescent girls—as catalysts for lasting change. By working together to break down barriers and foster diversity, we can build a more equitable and inclusive society for generations to come.
