home: Open Submission Exhibition 2015
David Stephenson was chosen as the overall winner for his striking photographs of ‘Raymond’ and the two runners up were Judy Foley and Mark Granier.
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council are delighted to present this exhibition of visual art by artists who have studied in, are originally from, or are living or working in the county.
home offers the public an opportunity to view the wealth of visual arts practice that is taking place in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown.
The exhibition features thirty seven artists and was selected by Mark St. John Ellis, Director of the nag Gallery, Dublin. Fifty artworks were selected from the three hundred and fifty eight pieces submitted. The submissions reflected the artists’ personal interpretation of ‘home’ and could have been categorised into the following ‘ local: seascapes and the surrounding area ‘, ‘ personal: objects, family and pets ‘ and a more abstract category that would have been relevant to the individual artist.
As selector Ellis took a more universal look at the interpretation of ‘ home’. This included home as the dwelling, ‘home’ as the symbol of the past, ‘home’ in the socio political environment, particularly in light of the rise and collapse in development and ‘home’ as a symbol of refuge. Ellis selected with the view of putting together an exhibition that reflected all of these points.
As part of home the Learning Programme will offer opportunities for visitors to explore and engage with the artworks on show.
