HK Stuart: Moments of Grace
“In September 2017 Garter Lane facilitated my first solo show, Muirgean.
I’m a portrait & wedding photographer based in Waterford, Ireland. I’ve wanted to be a photographer since I was 13 years old, I dreamt of telling epic stories that would outlive me, a window into the past for future generations to cherish. I’ve always sought to explore the world around me through art. My aptitude eventually led me to Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) in 2013 where I discovered my true passion through my lecturers and mentors, Adrian Reilly and Dr. Mark Curran. During my degree in Photography at IADT I excelled in portrait and fashion photography which naturally led me to the world of wedding photography, which is a perfect fusion of the two. I love that on the same day I get to create wildly romantic portraits, style still life vignettes, and become a fly on the wall recording some of the rawest and most vulnerable moments of our lives. All of my photographs working together to capture the ephemeral essence of a wedding day.
I am a believer in love knowing no bounds. I am committed to the promotion of diversity, inclusivity and celebrating our differences as they are what makes us beautiful. I think of my work as a celebration and affirmation of life. Each portrait is an adventure, exploring the unique character and personal strengths of my subjects. A love of people and a deep interest in the human experience is key to my work. It’s not about how you look, it’s about who you are.
I adore my job and I’m grateful to do what I love. I believe that what Joseph Campbell has said is true: ‘If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living.”
