Gingles & Gingles is a collaborative exhibition between father and daughter artists Graham and Lisa Gingles.

Graham Gingles’ fourth exhibition at the Peppercanister has the distinction that this time his artist daughter Lisa Gingles who is based in Valencia, Spain, will join him. A member of the Royal Ulster Academy of Art and a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy in Dublin Annual exhibition, Graham’s unique vision in contemporary Irish art has earned him widespread critical acclaim and his work titled Africa, 2010 earned him the Sculpture prize at the RHA that year.

As Irish Times Art Critic, Aidan Dunne wrote last year:

“Peer into one of his sculptural boxes and it’s as though you’ve stepped into a hall of mirrors. The spaces multiply and disorient. They seem to lead the eye into impossible corridors, rooms and alcoves, into spatial labyrinths that are palpably impossible given the modest dimensions of the exterior enclosures. …. He has made in excess of 100 box sculptures to date. Together they amount to one of the most significant bodies of work produced by any Irish artist in any era.”

His extraordinary box sculptures and paintings will hang side by side for the first time with work by Lisa Gingles who will exhibit a series of small drawings. Lisa creates small, beautiful drawings overlaid on pages reclaimed from books and manuscripts. Echoing ancient fables, her part beast, part human images emerge from the underlying texts into a stark, formidable world. Aokigahara, the title of one of Lisa’s works refers to a 35-square-kilometre forest that lies at the northwest base of Mount Fuji in Japan. Also known as the Sea of Trees, the forest has a historic association with demons in Japanese mythology and is a popular place for suicides; 54 completed the act in 2010, despite numerous signs, in Japanese and English, urging people to reconsider their actions.

Images of memory and place, despair and resolution combine to create an interesting dialogue between 2 generations of this talented artistic family.

Dr. Jude Stephens of Queens University Belfast will open the exhibition. Graham’s long-term partner, Jude has for a long-time moonlighted as an artist’s model, most notably for the highly gifted Basil Blackshaw from Co. Antrim. We look forward with excitement to what is sure to be a special evening and exhibition.
