Film on Sound
Thursday 25 April at 6pm
The Kevin Barry Room National Concert Hall
Last event in the new music::new Ireland CMC Salon series
The programme for this event comprises three new videos, followed by a slideshow with live performance. Those involved share an interest in exploring the relationship between contemporary music and visual art. Through mixing disciplines, a new creative arena is opened, resulting in works which would not otherwise be made.
Truth and Beauty
Video: Marie Hanlon Music: Emma O Halloran
Dublin Bay provides the source material for the visuals in this video. Images unfold in slow, measured motion, played out against an electronic sound world which is arresting, stark and spare.
Lines & Spaces
Video: Marie Hanlon Music: Rhona Clarke
When a small moment of domestic life is isolated and viewed closely it becomes a little drama in itself. Add sound and this commonplace event is transformed into something strange and intriguing.
For All We Know
Video: Marie Hanlon Music: Gráinne Mulvey, Soundscape III
Illusion and play, solid form and space are key elements in this video. The music combines flute with electronics, conjuring great vistas of space and sonic outer worlds.
A Way Through
Slideshow: Marie Hanlon Music: Jane O’Leary
Played by Concorde: Madeleine Staunton (alto flute), Paul Roe (bass clarinet) and Dermot Dunne (accordion)
There is a sense of time standing still in this work. The higher registers of lower wind instruments mingle with the accordion, here the accordion is regarded as a ‘wind’ instrument. The accompanying slideshow comprises winter images from the woods at Annaghmakerrig.
