Roscommon Arts Centre is delighted to present Bernadette by Turner Prize winner Duncan Campbell curated by Linda Shevlin. One of a trilogy of films, it focuses on female Irish dissident and political activist Bernadette Devlin. In 1969 she became the youngest woman ever elected to the British Parliament and she personified the young radical Catholics of Northern Ireland at the onset of the modern troubles.

Bernadette presents an unravelling, open-ended story. In it Campbell fuses documentary and fiction in order to assess both the subject matter and the mode of communicating it.

Duncan Campbell completed the MFA at Glasgow School of Art in 1998 and a BA in Fine Art at the University of Ulster in 1996. He lives and works in Glasgow. He has been awarded the 2014 Turner Prize and was one of three artists representing Scotland at the VeniceBiennale as part of Scotland + Venice 2013 (Corin Sworn, Duncan Campbell, Hayley Tompkins). In 2012 Campbell took part in Manifesta 9 curated by Cuauhtémoc Medina, Katerina Gregos and Dawn Ades, Belgium and in 2010 he took part in Tracing the Invisible, Gwangju Biennale. RADICAL ACTIONS SEMINAR

Bernadette is the Irish iteration of the three part International Project ‘Radical Actions’ curated by Linda Shevlin. Supported by Culture Ireland, Roscommon County Council and Galway County Council, the ‘Radical Actions’ exhibition featuring Kennedy Browne, Duncan Campbell, Jesse Jones and Seamus Nolan was presented in RMIT Gallery, Melbourne in September 2016.

The final part of this project will take the form of a seminar in the historic setting of King House, Boyle. This seminar will look at the legacy of revolution & activism in Ireland and the artists’ role in shaping future states with speakers including Professor Luke Gibbons, artists Sarah Browne, Jesse Jones, Gareth Kennedy & Seamus Nolan, film maker Treasa O’Brien and photojournalist and videographer Paula Geraghty of Trade Union TV.

It will also feature a screening of the film Eat Your Children directed/written by Treasa O’Brien & co-directed/written by Mary Jane O’Leary. Eat Your Children documents the evolution of protest in modern day Ireland.
