Drawing Now
We invite you to join us at the MAC for Drawing Now: a talk and public forum exploring drawing’s roles, functions and values in contemporary culture.
Produced in collaboration with The Belfast School of Art and programmed in conjunction with our current exhibition, David Hockney: I draw, I do, Drawing Now aims to reflect upon the many facets of contemporary drawing practice and the diverse forms drawing now takes. As such, we invite artists, designers, students, curators, theorists and members of the public to come and participate in this discussion, which, among other things, will examine drawing’s place within educational and gallery contexts, and its relation to other art forms and disciplines; including the effect of technology on drawing and the potentials of drawing as a performative pursuit.
Opening this public session, Doris Rohr (Associate Lecturer at the Belfast School of Art) will deliver a talk on the subject of Drawing Then, Drawing Now; offering an historical overview of drawing – which has traditionally been viewed as an intermediate, preparatory or secondary medium – and examining more recent shifts in critical thinking, which have seen drawing reappraised in contemporary art practice, theory and education as an independent discipline, a form of research and a means of artistic exploration as much as observation.
This event is free but spaces are limited so booking is essential.
