Declan Kelly is a Drogheda based visual artist and is a founding member, co-director and co-curator with NeXus Arts. He has a higher degree in Fine Art from HETAC Ireland and a PDE in Art & Design from the NCAD in Dublin. He has artwork in collections both in Ireland and Belgium. During the past seven years he has travelled extensively in support of his research and image making. Declan has received awards from Create Louth, Drogheda Borough Council and the Arts Council.
This latest exhibition of work, “In:transit”, is the culmination of artistic research and development carried out during the past seven years, including artists residencies in Ghent, Belgium , The Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Co. Monaghan, and the Cill Rialaig Centre, Co. Kerry. It is the most comprehensive body of his work to be shown so far in his career. The exhibition is a series of mixed media images made from drawing and painting materials.
This exhibition is primarily about how journeys transform us, about how we are in a constant state of change during the passage of our lives. He achieves this transformation by using images based on windows, doors and corridors to allow the viewer to pass into the artwork. This body of work invites the viewer to consider the idea that we navigate through life’s sometimes turbulent ocean and that every place we aim to arrive at will inevitably lead to some unknown place that is altered by our very own procession. It is the unknown that is being forever unveiled before us if only we look past the open doorway and ask what lies there. His work challenges the viewer to question themselves by engaging the work.
