Curator’s Choice: Phyl Guerin
Thursday 1 September – Monday 31 October 2016
Phyl Guerin is a native of East Limerick and a recent graduate of Limerick School of Art & Design. She concerns herself and is heavily influenced by the maritime history of Limerick and responds with work inviting nuanced reflection and meditation. Her outputs are both lens based work and active, action research. This approach is evidenced in her recently completed MA in Fine Art (2015), titled A Drowned World: The Limerick Sailors’ Home.
Quiet Possession forms part of the work centred around the Limerick Sailors’ Home, founded in 1856 and its chief protagonist Sir James Spaight. It formed part of a trilogical approach reflecting the passion and lifework of Spaight, the raising of public donations to fund the house, and his tirelessness as regards the advancement of Limerick and its Harbour. It culminated in the showing of lens based work, installation and text concerning these passions, in the original home of Spaight at 77 O’Connell Street as her MA examination show.
Kind thanks is extended to her supervisors Dr Dara Waldron, Mark O’Kelly, and the Graduate Research Office at Limerick Institute of Technology.
