‘Conflict, Migration and Identity in Modern Ireland: Global and Transnational perspectives’ offers a timely opportunity to reflect on the fascinating relationships between conflict, migration and identity in modern Irish history and culture. This conference will explore the Irish experience within transnational and global trends and contexts, and will feature lectures, talks, performances and masterclasses on the histories, sociology and literatures of migration, conflict and identity by world-renowned Irish and international academics, artists and commentators, includingProfessor Joe Lee (New York University), Professor Bridget Anderson (University of Oxford), Professor Joe Cleary (Maynooth University) andProfessor Enda Delaney (University of Edinburgh).
Set within the context of VISUAL’s spring exhibition programme of Irish and international work which explores questions of contemporary cultural identities in response to the centenary of the 1916 Rising, the programme includes Recreating the Pastoral, a major solo show by Yinka Shonibare MBE, Post Colony by Gareth Kennedy, new work by Clodagh Emoe in collaboration with Spirasi, a NGO that works with asylum seekers, refugees and migrants; The Great Wall by Tadhg O Sullivan; and Antiphon, an improvised musical performance in response to the season’s themes, by musicians Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and Iarla Ó Lionáird.
The conference is free to all students currently registered at Carlow College and Trinity College Dublin. For all other participants, there is a registration fee of €25 /15 to cover the three days of the conference. For those wishing to register for a single day, the registration fee is €15/10. The registration fee includes access to all performances related to the conference, plus lunch. For those wishing to attend the conference dinner on Thursday 14th at 6pm, there is an additional fee of €28.
