Caterina Rossi: Urban Time
Metro Rome #3 is part of the Urban Time collection, a series dedicated to capturing fleeting moments from various parts of the world, whether it’s the bustling streets of Talbot Street or, in this case, the vibrant energy of Rome.
“To capture a moment of the contemporary is to explore the modern world and gain insight into human nature.”
The subjects of Caterina’s works are ordinary people immersed in their daily routines, commuting to work, walking their dogs, or simply savoring a coffee. Caterina finds profound pleasure in capturing these simple, everyday moments, as she believes they hold a unique beauty and significance.
She firmly believes that beauty exists in all people and places, waiting to be revealed to those who are willing to see it. This belief is reflected in her use of light and darkness, which she skillfully combines through charcoal and vibrant pigments, bringing depth and contrast to her pieces.
Although Caterina identifies primarily as a figurative artist, in the Urban Time collection, the abstract backgrounds play an equally crucial role as the subjects themselves. Some of her works require numerous layers to achieve the desired depth, while others convey their essence with just a few elegant strokes.
Over the years, Caterina has expressed her artistic vision through various mediums and techniques. She works with wood, acrylics, board, charcoal, and custom-mixed pigments, allowing her the freedom to experiment and create unique pieces.
Charcoal, in particular, holds a special place in her heart. Its deep, natural, and subtly textured quality is simple yet complex, emotive yet contemplative. Caterina loves how charcoal interacts with strokes of color, revealing its provocative beauty in unexpected ways.
The surface of a piece is vital to the final result; it often takes many layers to reach a level that feels complete and satisfying. Caterina continuously experiments with different materials and mediums to bring her ideas to life.
Born in Alatri, an hour southeast of Rome, Caterina began her studies at the Art Institute in Anagni, Italy, and completed her degree at the Academy of Fine Arts of Frosinone in 2013. She now resides in Dublin, Ireland, where she continues to explore and create in her distinctive style.
