Carl Giffney b. Waterford, Ireland, 1983. The name for the town is Veðrafjórðr in Norse and Port Láirge in Irish.

Carl Giffney is a graduate of Ireland’s National College of Art and Design (NCAD) and the Irish Institute of Art, Design & Technology (IADT) holding first class honour BA and MA degrees respectively. He also studied at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, receiving a distinction, before completing his post-graduate studies in 2011.

With his individual art making practice, Giffney has been involved in projects both internationally and in Ireland, spending the majority of his time on residencies. Recent residencies have seen him work in disparate locations from St. Louis, USA; to Helsinki, Finland; to Rotterdam, The Netherlands; and in eclectic settings from coal mines, to seahorse farms, to churches. Recent solo exhibitions include PEINT at the Leitrim Sculpture centre Ireland, Partij voor Ierland, at Roodkapje Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and Lucite Fall at The Galway Arts Centre, Ireland. The constant in Giffney’s eclectic practice is the use of performative actions as methods of empirically investigating social capital- how it forms, changes and comes in contact with other social capitals.

On completing his Fine Art BA in 2007, he co-founded The Good Hatchery, an artist led initiative that he directs with Ruth Lyons and its members.

In addition to his individual art making practice Giffney collaborates with a number of different artists, writers and people skilled in specific fields. Collaborative and collective work features Sisyphus Americana, a collaboration with Andreas Kindler Von Knobloch at the Hoffman LeChance Gallery, USA,Good Hatchery*, with Ruth E Lyons at the NCAD gallery Dublin and Bravo Serotonin an experimental work involving 27 participants that took place at The Good Hatchery and along the Grand Canal.

Giffney was the recipient of the Irish Arts Councils Visual Artists Bursary 2014.

I really don’t feel them and its related projects continue to be made across five residencies within Frontiers In Retreat (2013 – 2018), a five year collaborative residency project across seven EU countries funded by the EU Culture Fund.
