For Heritage Week our free talks, workshops and digital scanning sessions will celebrate the treasure trove of memories held in our family photo albums and collections.

Our Photo Album of Ireland exhibition looks at diverse experiences of the border – viewed from the perspective of the family photo album.

FREE PHOTO SCANNING WORKSHOPS
12noon – 2pm, Saturday 19 & Tuesday 22 August
15 mins per session – booking essential

This hands-on photography-scanning workshop will create high-resolution digital copies of your family photographs; it will show you how to care for old photographs and advise on restoring & repairing precious damaged photographs.
Please bring up to 10 old photographs (All photographs are returned immediately) and a USB memory stick or an email address.

Guest talk ‘From Cootehill to Canada’
3pm Wednesday 23 August
Dr. Orla Fitzpatrick, photo-historian and librarian at the National Museum will discuss the history of photography and the Whitfield album from County Cavan.

Free daily lunchtime tours and talks

Join us for an informal tour of the exhibition and a brief talk outlining the best ways to preserve and care for your family album.

EXHIBITION
Family album photographs give a fascinating insight into our private and public histories – revealing details about how people lived and worked that official histories often overlook.

Our Photo Album of Ireland archive project records the rich social history held in family archives. This online archive project explores the role photography plays in documenting our lives and recording our memories – preserving them for future generations. The exhibition features a selection of photographs from the current phase of research – Reframing the Border – recording diverse experiences of families from the border counties.

Supported by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Monaghan County Council Creative Ireland Programme.

Drum: Portrait of a Village Photo Album of Ireland talk & scanning events

Venue: Stewart’s Shop, Drum, County Monaghan. No booking required.
What participants need to bring:Please bring along old photographs that you would like us to scan at high resolution. All photographs are returned immediately. Each session last for 15 mins and we can scan up to 20 photographs per person. Please bring a USB pen drive or an email address for us to forward your scanned images.

Mullaghabane, County Armagh– Photo Album of Ireland talk & scanning events

Illustrated talk: 7pm on Thursday 24 August 2017
Venue: Tí Chulainn Cultural Centre, Maphoner, Mullaghbane.

This illustrated talk by Trish Lambe, Curator from Gallery of Photography will give an overview of the history of photography in Ireland. The talk will feature archival photographs contributed by families across Ireland to The Photo Album of Ireland project. Laurence McKeown, film make and writer (and contributor to the project) will talk about his own family photo collection. The talk will also give your tips on how to care for your precious family photographs.

Scanning Workshop: Tí Chulainn Cultural Centre, Mullaghbawn, Newry, Armagh

Working with Tí Chulainn Centre, this hands-on photography scanning workshop led by Gallery of Photography will scan your family photographs and make high resolution digital copies. We will also guide you through the basics of how to care for your photographs give advice on options available for restoring & repairing damaged photographs.
