A public symposium exploring the intersection of sound art, public space, and urban design • Session 3 – Thursday 8 May

Following the success of Sessions 1 and 2 earlier in April, this public symposium exploring the intersection of sound art, public space and urban design continues with its final installment of talks, presented by Dublin City Council (DCC) in partnership with the Goethe-Institut and The National College of Art and Design (NCAD).

Session 3: Environment: From Sound Art to Urban Sound Design and Acoustic Planning

Thursday 8 May, 2pm-5pm, Wood Quay Venue, Dublin Civic Offices, Dublin 2

Tickets to this event are free, but advance registration is required. For further information and to register for tickets visit http://map.minorarchitecture.org/listening-for-the-city/

Beyond Noise and Silence: Listening for the City is an event series focused on exploring how the city’s sound environment might be used by artists, architects, and urban designers to activate experimental architectures, urban experiences, and new forms of public space. Questioning the way that sound relates to our experience of place and to our memories of the cities that we live in, this series will investigate the potential of this often-neglected dimension of urban space, focusing on practices based in Dublin as well as a selection of innovative international perspectives.

Session 3: Environment will be dedicated to discussing the themes of urban sound design and acoustic planning within the city council itself, featuring perspectives from artists, researchers, architects, and members of the council and setting the stage for an ongoing enquiry into the potential of this medium as it might evolve on an urban scale in collaboration with the city.

This session will feature presentations by Sven Anderson (Artist), Steve Larkin (Architect), Brian McManus (Head of Traffic Noise & Air Quality Unit, DCC), Sarah Lappin (Architect), and Gascia Ouzounian (Musicologist). These presentations at Wood Quay Venue will be geared towards artists, architects, planners, and others with an interest in how the urban soundscape might be treated as a component of the built or designed environment.

“Allowing sound to be considered as an element of the built or planned environment suddenly opens a new sense of what the city might be, as an experience and not as an accidental condition.”

– Sven Anderson (Artist / Curator of ‘Beyond Noise and Silence’)

A site-visit / preview of Sven Anderson’s sound installation in Smithfield Plaza will take place before the event on 8 May. More information about this preview will be provided via email following registration for the symposium.

This event is curated by Sven Anderson to complement the public art commission MAP: Manual for Acoustic Planning and Urban Sound Design. This project was initiated as part of Interacting With the City, the second strand of the Dublin City Public Art Programme, and is funded from the per cent for art scheme through the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government.
