from islands to other seas

from islands to other seas | Thursday 6 October – Saturday 29 October 2016 | Graphic Studio Gallery

Graphic Studio Gallery is delighted to present a new body of work by three  gifted printmakers, Yoko Akino, Niamh Flanagan and Clare Henderson.

The works in this exhibition explore islands and the spaces around them. It is a theme that has been of interest to the artists for many years. Each artist has an approach that is highly stylized, creating images that linger and demand inspection, each work depicting otherworldly spaces of oceans, landscapes and islands.

In the works of Niamh Flanagan and Yoko Akino, images are punctuated by the use of strong bold colours.  Akino’s areas of intricate patterns create a sense of rhythm, that is often echoed in Flanagan’s use of recurring motifs, from trees to dwellings. Clare Henderson’s works more closely resemble a real rather than imagined world, but they portray a dream-like quality that is simultaneously beautiful and haunting.

Yoko Akino is surrounded by views of the ocean at her home on the Cooley Peninsiula, and is drawn to the dramatic shapes of the coastline.  Her pared down expanses of vivid colour, adjacent to detailed blocks of patterned lines, represent views from the east and west coasts of Ireland, that are influenced by her memories of the Honshu coastline, between the Japanese and Pacific Ocean.

Niamh Flanagan’s prints explore the search for utopias, and a restless desire to be somewhere else.  She uses colour to set an emotionally complex tone, with suggestive elements of a personal landscape, both rural and urban, internal and external.  They frequently explore notions of safety, containment and captivity, and conversely, freedom and alienation.

Clare Henderson’s sparsely populated landscapes, wrest somewhere between un-spoilt perfection and desolation.  They reflect upon the impact climate change has on humanity, and the natural world and what mass displacement and migration means to humans’ collective condition.
