Walking at Three Miles Per Hour is the title of a new series of paintings by Eamon Colman at Hillsboro Fine Art, Dublin. The new work for this exhibition was inspired by the act of walking and the average speed of a person undertaking a long walk. The narrative the artist evokes is closely bound up with the act of walking; life viewed as a journey.

For Colman the act of walking takes you to a destination, but also offers the opportunity to observe everything along the way – these observations becoming instrumental sources of inspiration.

“One of the interesting things about walking”, says Colman, “is the fact that the road tells the story of the people who went before you, the traces are evident on a post rail – rested upon for generations, the short cut taken through the grass field, so walking becomes a moment of connection between the traveller and the tale”.

Born in 1957 in Dublin, Eamon Colman is one of Ireland’s foremost abstract painters. He is an elected member of Aosdána and has exhibited in Ireland and internationally for 35 years. His more than 30 solo exhibitions include mid-term retrospectives at the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) in 1997 and at Strule Arts Centre, Northern Ireland, in 2013; with other significant exhibitions at the Palais de Congrès – Lorient (1998), Frederickshavn, Denmark (1999), Oriel Q, Queens Hall Gallery, Wales (2005, 2010, 2014), Cecille R. Hunt Museum, Webster University, USA (2008/9). His work forms part of important museum, public and private collections around the world including Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), Arts Council of Ireland, Office of Public Works (OPW), Danish Arts, Deutsche Bank, Contemporary Irish Arts Society, American Express, Delta Airlines, Citibank and many others.
